hey Manson. It's a safe bet that my faith (read: interest) in you has been altered irreversibly in the period of time since Holy Wood. I was largely disappointed by the album, and I felt to a larger degree mislead but what I perceived as very false advertising on your part.
suffice it to say that my interest was mildly rekindled by the Resident Evil score (which was excellent) and the studio clips of John and Skold you posted in Spring 2002. Since then I've witnessed you take steps to extinguish every shred of enthusiasm and excitement I had in the band, both for myself and countless others like me who have/had/ grown weary of the same tired Marilyn Manson formula of vague propaganda, empty promises, and tedious rhetoric.
I'm happy to say that some of my hope in you was restored this evening by the video you posted...which was not only revealing and illuminating, but shadowy and mysterious as well. It's that balance between the grotesque and the accessible that I feel has been lacking to this point.
In many respects I had the impression that you were acting purely out of self-interest...and as I'm sure you're well aware, such behavior is fatal to the commercial artist. I don't propose that you whore yourself out at every possibile opportunity; ostensibly, most of us are here because we initially found you risque and fringe. But there's a fine line to be drawn between becoming a corporate cum spittoon and developing into a fully self-reflexive monster without any perception or hold on the people who once valued your art, creativity, and brilliance to such an extensive degree.
perhaps this all comes off a sour grapes from a disgruntled fan - the old Pete Townshend line of "we're not gonna take it" - but it's become increasingly difficult to follow you through your many persona metamorphoses without the knowledge that you had any real interest in the respect of your fans. thanks to the video you posted tonight, some shred of faith has been restored and I'm hoping I might once again go back to telling people how I believe GAOG will be the best Manson album since ACSS. Obviously if I didn't still admire and respect you deeply, I wouldn't have stuck around for as long as I have.
I would be curious to hear your opinions of what I've said since I'm sure it's been echoed by others in some respect at the Oracle in the past week. do you feel as if I've completely misinterpreted your intentions and motives or is this simply a case of the fan not getting exactly what he wants from his "hero" and throwing his arms in the air in disgust? |
